Some words from Shoko about the track : "This is my idea of a really old Japanese folk song. It sounds exactly like a traditional chant from many centuries ago, but in fact it is not. It was actually made with midi sounds on the computer. It is the clash between the old and new, that is interesting to me. Confronting the ancient with the contemporary. I think the process of taking from a cultural heritage and adapting it in today’s context is a refreshing thing to do in music because we never know what reaction it will produce as time and its perception are everchanging.
I was raised majorly by my grandma who was still very close to these traditional folk songs which were also used in folkloric dances and rituals. My hometown has a very deep spiritual heritage, with its own religious beliefs. It’s a kind of mystical place where you can find countless shrines in isolated places, sacred zone in the mountains, venerated trees, as well as spooky mummies of monks still sitting in “zazen” position or the meditation posture. All this is somehow still flowing within me as an essentials part of my lineage and it naturally runs in my body and mind. I made this song effortlessly, as though it was something I’ve always known. The title is from a magical mountain in my home town called 月山 (Gassan)."
